The recent decision by the Federal Territories Pardons Board to halve the 12-year prison sentence of former Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak has stirred a call for transparency and clarity. Khairy Jamaluddin, former Umno Youth chief, emphasized the need for the Pardons Board to elucidate the reasoning behind this reduction to avoid speculation and maintain public trust.
In a statement to The Star, Jamaluddin expressed concern that without a clear explanation, the decision could lead to conjecture about favoritism or differing application of rules. He urged the board to provide insight, especially if the reduction was based on Najib's service to the nation.
The Federal Territories Pardons Board, in an announcement today, disclosed the decision to cut Najib’s sentence, stemming from his involvement in the 1MDB scandal. The former prime minister's misappropriation of RM42 million from a former 1MDB unit resulted in a reduced prison term and a decreased fine from RM210 million to RM50 million.
Najib, who commenced his prison sentence in August 2022, is now expected to be released by 2028. Moreover, he may be eligible for parole on good behavior after serving two-thirds of the six-year term. The decision sparked discussions about the fairness and consistency of the legal system, given the high-profile nature of the case.
The official statement from the Federal Territories Pardons Board, released through the Prime Minister’s Department’s Legal Affairs Division, clarified that the decision was made during the Pardons Board meeting on January 29. The meeting, chaired by the then Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah, considered five pardon applications, including Najib’s.
It's important to note that according to the Federal Constitution, the Agong leads the Pardons Board meetings for the federal territories. The board comprises the attorney general, the Federal Territories minister, and up to three other members appointed by the Agong. As discussions surrounding the reduced sentence intensify, there is a growing call for transparency in the decision-making process to uphold the integrity of the justice system.
