PKR's information chief, Fahmi Fadzil, addressed criticisms aimed at the party's silence following the recent decision by the Pardons Board to reduce the sentence of former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak. Fahmi, who also serves as the communications minister, acknowledged the feedback while underscoring the party's commitment to its principles and internal discipline.

During a press conference after the Cabinet meeting, Fahmi stated, "We take note of the feedback received. Nevertheless, we remain steadfast in upholding the principles and disciplinary standards of our party."

Najib, who was serving a 12-year prison term for charges related to abuse of power, breach of trust, and money laundering involving RM42 million from SRC International, saw his sentence halved by the Pardons Board. Additionally, his fine was reduced from RM210 million to RM50 million.

According to an official statement released by the Legal Affairs Division of the Prime Minister's Department, acting as the secretariat for the Federal Territories Pardons Board, the decision was reached during a meeting held on January 29. The meeting, chaired by the then Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah, reviewed five pardon applications, including Najib's.

The Federal Constitution mandates that the Agong presides over Pardons Board meetings for the Federal Territories, with members including the attorney general, the Federal Territories minister, and up to three other appointees by the Agong.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim confirmed his involvement in expediting Najib's hearing, ensuring it occurred sooner than scheduled.

In summary, PKR's Fahmi Fadzil responded to criticisms of the party's silence regarding Najib Razak's reduced sentence, affirming their adherence to internal principles and discipline. The decision by the Pardons Board to halve Najib's sentence and reduce his fine was made during a meeting chaired by the Agong, with the Prime Minister acknowledging his intervention to expedite the process.
