The recent decision by the Pardons Board to reduce the sentence of former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak is seen as a validation by UMNO supporters that they are on the right path, according to University Malaya political analyst Prof Dr Awang Azman Awang Pawi. He noted that UMNO has consistently maintained Najib's innocence, emphasizing that Najib's willingness to face trial stemmed from his belief in his own innocence.
"UMNO members staunchly believe that Najib had been deceived by those around him," Awang Azman told FocusM. “They feel that Najib was misled and unintentionally became the scapegoat for individuals like Jho Low and others involved in the 1MDB scandal.”
Awang Azman drew a parallel with the sentiments of PKR supporters during the imprisonment of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. PKR supporters believed in a conspiracy against Anwar and campaigned for his pardon, which he eventually received.
Noting the difference between Anwar and Najib's situations, Awang Azman highlighted that Anwar received a full pardon, whereas Najib's sentence was merely reduced. Despite this, he believes that Najib's supporters will continue to advocate for his innocence, viewing his freedom as an advantage for UMNO over other Malay-based parties.
However, Awang Azman cautioned that Najib's release does not guarantee a resurgence in support for UMNO among Malay voters. He pointed out that UMNO has struggled to gain traction among Malay grassroots, and it remains uncertain whether Najib's freedom will translate into increased support for the party.
while Najib's reduced sentence may bolster confidence among UMNO supporters, the party's ability to regain support among Malay voters remains uncertain, hinging largely on Najib's post-release actions and the prevailing political landscape.
The political landscape in Malaysia remains complex, with various factors influencing the support for political parties. Despite Najib Razak's reduced sentence, UMNO faces challenges in winning back the trust of Malay voters, especially among the younger generation who may view the party's leadership and policies differently.
One key factor is the ongoing efforts to address corruption and improve governance. The 1MDB scandal, for which Najib was convicted, has left a lasting impact on public perception. The government's commitment to combating corruption and ensuring accountability will be closely watched, and any perceived leniency towards Najib could undermine these efforts.
Additionally, UMNO's ability to connect with the aspirations of the Malay community, particularly on issues such as economic opportunities and social welfare, will be crucial. The party will need to demonstrate its relevance and effectiveness in addressing the needs of the people, especially in the face of economic challenges and the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
Moreover, UMNO's internal dynamics and leadership will play a significant role in its future prospects. The party's ability to unite and present a coherent vision for the country's future will be vital in winning back support and rebuilding its reputation.
In conclusion, while Najib Razak's reduced sentence may provide a temporary boost for UMNO, the party faces long-term challenges in regaining the support of Malay voters. Its success will depend on its ability to address issues of governance, corruption, and leadership, as well as its capacity to connect with the aspirations of the Malaysian people.
