RANAU: Three local men, aged 22, 24 and 27, were remanded for four days following an alleged assault and criminal intimidation incident involving a man at a parking area near Kiaburi Plaza, here, on Sept 4.
The remand application was made at the Ranau Magistrate’s Court in connection with a police investigation under Sections 323 and 506 of the Penal Code, relating to voluntarily causing hurt and criminal intimidation.
The incident occurred at about 3am when the complainant was at the front of a building at the Kiaburi Plaza parking area.
Police investigations found that the complainant was allegedly approached by a man known to him, who was accused of assaulting him in the neck area before leaving the scene.
The complainant later claimed that he was confronted by several other individuals who were allegedly armed with parang.
Fearing for his safety, the complainant left the area and subsequently lodged a police report to enable police to investigate the incident.
Following the report, a team from the Ranau Criminal Investigation Department arrested the three men at a homestay in Kampung Paka Dua, Ranau, at about 8.20am on Sept 8.
The suspects were subsequently brought before the Ranau Magistrate’s Court for a remand application.
Police sought the remand to enable investigators to complete several aspects of the investigation, including recording statements from the suspects and witnesses and tracing and identifying items believed to have been used during the incident.
During the investigation, police also conducted a search and seized a small transparent plastic packet believed to contain syabu weighing 0.05 gram.
The suspected drug was reportedly found concealed inside a blue bag kept in the pocket of a pair of jeans allegedly worn by one of the men. A modified straw and other items were also reportedly seized.
Police subsequently opened a separate investigation under the relevant provisions of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
The remand was also sought to allow police to conduct further checks and establish the circumstances surrounding the alleged assault and criminal intimidation.
The court granted the remand order, with the three men to remain in custody from Sept 10 until Sept 13 to facilitate further investigation.
Police investigations are continuing.
The alleged offences have yet to be established in court, and the individuals involved are presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
