SEREMBAN - Tunku Datuk Seri Nadzaruddin Tuanku Jaafar no longer holds the hereditary title of Tunku Panglima Besar of Negeri Sembilan.

Royal Household Comptroller Datuk Azizi Mohamad Ali said in a statement that this was due to Tunku Nadzaruddin's acceptance of the title of Yang di-Pertuan Besar (YDPB) of Negeri Sembilan which was deemed invalid.

"It is hereby informed that the event described as the 'Proclamation Ceremony' of the 12th Yang di-Pertuan Besar of Negeri Sembilan, held at a hotel in Alor Gajah, Melaka on June 5, 2026, is invalid and is not recognised under the Constitution, laws and customs of Negeri Sembilan.

"Therefore, the title of Yang di-Pertuan Besar that Tunku Nadzaruddin attempted to assume has no legal effect. By attempting to accept that invalid title, he has automatically relinquished the hereditary title of Tunku Panglima Besar of Negeri Sembilan, which he previously held," he said.

Azizi added that there is now no hereditary holder of the title Tunku Panglima Besar.

On June 6, media reports stated that the state's four Undangs had exercised their authority to proclaim Tunku Nadzaruddin as the 12th Yang di-Pertuan Besar of Negeri Sembilan.

However, the proclamation ceremony had to be held at a hotel in Melaka and was attended by members of the Dewan Keadilan dan Undang (DKU), namely Jelebu Undang Datuk Maarof Mat Rashad and Tuanku Besar of Tampin Syed Razman Tunku Syed Idrus Al-Qadri.

Other DKU members — Johol Undang Datuk Muhammed Abdullah, Rembau Undang Datuk Abdul Rahim Yasin and Datuk Shahbandar Sungei Ujong Datuk Seri Utama Badarudin Abdul Khalid — witnessed the ceremony via video conference.

Prior to the ceremony, a brief commotion reportedly occurred when the traditional chiefs were prevented from meeting Tunku Nadzaruddin on the upper floor of the hotel.
