KUANTAN: Pahang police have crippled a drug trafficking syndicate following the arrest of two men and the seizure of 56 compressed bricks of cannabis weighing 58.1 kilogrammes (kg) valued at RM174,000 in front of a homestay in Maran on Monday
Pahang acting police chief Datuk Azry Akmar Ayob said police detained both suspects, aged 44 and 30, at about 1.20 am while they were transferring four bags from a car’s boot suspiciously.
He said checks of the four bags yielded 56 transparent plastic wrappers and aluminium foils containing dried compressed lumps suspected to be cannabis.
“The current market value of the seized cannabis is estimated at RM174,000 based on the price of RM3,000 per kilogramme,” he told a press conference at the Pahang Contingent Police Headquarters here today.
Azry Akmar said investigations revealed the syndicate’s modus operandi was to deliver drug supplies to areas with demand, adding that both suspects, believed to be from a northern state, admitted to receiving RM10,000 to deliver the drugs to the Maran district.
“It is understood that this is the first time the group from the north carried out a delivery to the East Coast, specifically Pahang, as they previously operated mostly in the Klang Valley,” he said.
He said background checks revealed both men had prior drug-related records.
He added that both suspects have been remanded for seven days, from last Monday to Sunday, to facilitate investigations under Section 39 billion of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
The case is also being investigated under Section 15(1)(a) of the same Act after preliminary urine tests on both suspects came back positive for methamphetamine, he said.
Meanwhile, Azry Akmar said Ops Hawk, conducted statewide across Pahang over three days beginning Monday, led to the arrest of 365 individuals.
He said the total included 79 arrests for drug supply offences, 90 for drug possession, 191 for urine-related offences, and five under special preventive measures, with drug seizures worth RM221,190.
