The Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (PIT-NDPS) Act, 1988, is proving to be an effective tool in curbing the drug menace in the Nurpur police district.

The district police detained two accused drug peddlers yesterday evening after obtaining preventive detention orders under Section 3(1) of the PIT-NDPS Act from the Home Department.

According to Nurpur SP Kulbhushan Verma, the police applied for the detention orders before the competent authority-cum-Secretary (Home) of the HP Government. The duo has been sent to the district jail in Dharamsala for a 3-month preventive detention period.

The offenders have been identified as Vivek Chaudhary, a resident of Ghar village, and Janak Raj, a resident of Tamota village. Multiple NDPS Act cases had previously been registered against both individuals following the recovery of contraband from their possession.
