UAAP: NU beats FEU to finish first round at top spot

MANILA, Philippines — National University (NU) outplayed Far Eastern University (FEU), 69-65, to top the first round of the UAAP Season 89 men’s basketball tournament on Sunday afternoon at the Ateneo Blue Eagles Gymnasium.

The NU Bulldogs capped the first round with a 5-2 win-loss record, tied with the University of the Philippines (UP).

The Jocson-based squad took the top spot at the end of the round despite being tied with UP because of the winner-over-the-other rule.

The FEU Tamaraws, on the other hand, suffered their second-straight loss, falling to a 4-3 win-loss card, and are now tied with the University of Santo Tomas for third place.

NU’s Macmac Alfanta led the scoring for the team against FEU after chipping in 14 points along with two rebounds.

PJ Palacielo and Tebol Garcia both churned out an identical output of 13 points, while Reinhard Jumamoy and Paul Francisco logged in 12 and 10 markers, respectively.

FEU had three double-digit scorers on its team with Cabs Cabonilas making 14 points, while Janrey Pasaol and  Mo Konateh both churned out 10 points, each.
