Ultraman costume raises security alarm at Perak National Day celebrations

A MAN dressed in an Ultraman costume was detained by police after he was spotted in a restricted area near the main stage during Perak’s National Day celebrations today, prompting swift security action to protect the royal guests.

Perak police chief Datuk Mohd Alwi Zainal Abidin said the 40-year-old local man was detained at about 5am after officers found his presence suspicious, although he had not caused any disturbance.

"We took swift action to detain him first, and he does have a psychiatric medical history," he said after the state-level National Day celebrations officiated by Sultan Perak Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah.

Also present was Raja Permaisuri Perak Tuanku Zara Salim.

Mohd Alwi said the man was detained as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of visitors, particularly members of the royal party.

"The man will still be referred to Hospital Bahagia Ulu Kinta (HBUK) in Tanjung Rambutan for assessment and further action," he said.

He said the celebrations and parade proceeded smoothly, with 525 police officers and personnel deployed from 5am to handle security and traffic control.

The incident comes a year after a woman, who was later confirmed to be a psychiatric patient, rushed towards Sultan Nazrin during the state’s National Day celebrations as he was saluting while the Perak state anthem was being played.

The woman, identified as Nurhaswani Afni Mohamad Zorki, was later charged at the Ipoh Magistrate’s Court with using criminal force against Sultan Nazrin.

She was fined RM500, or one month’s imprisonment in default, on July 6. - August 31, 2026
