UM denies disciplinary action against student over Najib, Tabung Haji remarks

UNIVERSITI Malaya (UM) has denied claims that disciplinary action was taken against a student whose questions about corruption and fundraising for former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak went viral following an iFuture session.

UM vice-chancellor Datuk Seri Prof Dr Noor Azuan Abu Osman said no disciplinary action had been taken against the student, dismissing circulating claims as untrue.

“I want to clarify that no disciplinary action has been taken against the student concerned.

“Therefore, claims circulating about this matter are untrue,” he said in a statement today.

He said the university respected students’ right to ask questions and express their views, adding that platforms such as iFuture, established by the Higher Education Ministry, enabled direct engagement between students and university leaders.

“Differences of opinion are not a threat, but part of the intellectual culture that must continue to be nurtured,” he said.

“We may not always agree on everything, but students must be given the space to speak and be heard.”

A video of the female student questioning corruption in relation to the Tabung Haji scandal and fundraising to help Najib pay a RM50 million fine recently attracted widespread attention.

Noor Azuan said UM remained committed to developing students who were critical, principled and responsible. - October 17, 2026
