UM Student Goes Viral For Calling Donations To Najib As 'Stupidest Thing Ever'

A student representative from Universiti Malaya (UM) has become an Internet sensation overnight after a clip of her making a bold take regarding public donations made to disgraced ex-prime minister Najib Razak went viral.

NST reported that Ummi Umairah Bakhit made the remarks during a dialogue with former minister Khairy Jamaluddin, Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari and Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur.

‘Stupidest thing I’ve watched’

In the clip, Ummi raised several high-profile corruption scandals which have plagued Malaysia in recent months, such as Tabung Haji (TH) and the son of a politician allegedly receiving RM4 million without having to work.

She then up the ante by expressing her honest thoughts about the public donating money to Najib after he was granted a conditional pardon by the Yang di-Pertua Agong.

The stupidest thing I have watched in my entire life is people donating to our former prime minister, Najib Razak, someone who clearly has a worldwide corruption case, 1MDB, and is clearly linked to corruption.”

Najib, who was convicted of misappropriating funds in the SRC International case, was allowed to serve the remainder of his sentence under house arrest until Aug 23, 2028.

However, it comes with the condition that he pays a RM50 million fine or risk going back to Kajang Prison.

A public donation drive was subsequently launched by UMNO to help Najib pay the fine, with the latest figure standing at RM9.25 million as of Sept 27.
