In a bold declaration that resonates with the rank-and-file members of Umno, the Party's Youth Chief, Dr. Akmal Saleh, has asserted that the future of the party is not in the hands of its top leaders but in those of its grassroots members. Speaking at the Tasek Gelugor Umno Youth delegates' conference, Dr. Akmal emphasized the critical role that ordinary members play in determining the direction and survival of the party.

Grassroots Empowerment as the Key to Revival

Dr. Akmal’s comments come in the wake of Umno’s disappointing performance in recent elections, including the 15th General Election (GE15), where the party secured only 26 parliamentary seats compared to the 109 it held two decades ago. This significant decline underscores the urgent need for a shift in strategy and leadership dynamics within the party.

"Umno’s future relies on its grassroots supporters," Dr. Akmal asserted firmly. "Voices and pressures of the grassroots can initiate the crucial changes needed to halt our party's decline." He calls for a bottom-up approach, emphasizing that members should be encouraged to express their views and shape the party's decisions, which is vital for Umno's resurgence.

Rejecting Top-Down Leadership

Dr. Akmal criticized the notion that the party’s leadership and direction should be controlled by a few top leaders. "Umno does not belong to its Supreme Council or the respective wing chiefs," he said. "The party belongs to every member." This statement reflects a growing sentiment among the party's base, who feel increasingly disconnected from the decisions made by their leaders.

He urged party members to hold their leaders accountable and not to be mere followers. "We are not cattle being led by rings in our noses." In Umno, we must upholds our principles and, most importantly, to have dignity."

Standing Up for Principles

In his speech, Dr. Akmal also addressed criticisms from within the party, particularly from Umno Supreme Council member Datuk Lokman Noor Adam. Lokman had attacked Dr. Akmal for his candid remarks about the party leadership and recent electoral strategies. However, Dr. Akmal defended his stance, asserting that having differing opinions is not an act of rebellion but a healthy part of political discourse.

"We demand leaders with honest principles," he stated. "We will call out the wrongs and accept what is right." He stressed that telling the truth, even when it is unpopular, is a fundamental tenet of effective leadership.

The Call for Unity and Open Debate

Dr. Akmal’s call for a more inclusive and responsive leadership has struck a chord with many within Umno. His remarks highlight the importance of open debate and diverse viewpoints in strengthening the party. He noted that it is in the party's spirit to share and appreciate diverse viewpoints for a healthy debate.

The Umno Youth Chief's outspoken nature has made him a polarizing figure, but it has also positioned him as a potential catalyst for change. His willingness to address uncomfortable truths and advocate for grassroots empowerment could either propel him in rank or break him from the party for his bold and outspoken voice. Alternatively, the grassroots may view him as exactly what Umno needs to regain its former glory.

Moving Forward

As Umno grapples with its current challenges, the message from Dr. Akmal Saleh is clear: the party’s future hinges on the active participation and influence of its grassroots members. By fostering an environment where every member’s voice is heard and respected, Umno can hope to rebuild and reposition itself as a dominant force in Malaysian politics.

The road ahead is undoubtedly challenging for a renewed and revitalized Umno. Whether the party’s top leaders will heed this call remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: the voice of the grassroots can no longer be ignored.
