Police seize 3.94kg of drugs and arrest an unemployed man in Alor Gajah, with the haul estimated to be able to supply over 12,000 users.

ALOR GAJAH: An unemployed man was arrested last Wednesday with 3.94 kilogrammes of ecstasy estimated to be worth RM591,607.50.

Alor Gajah police chief Supt Ahmad Abu Bakar said the 33-year-old suspect was detained by highway patrol personnel along the Pedas–Ayer Keroh Highway.

He was apprehended after being found driving at high speed during an accident prevention patrol.

“Further inspection of the vehicle led to the discovery of the illicit substances,” Ahmad said at a press conference today.

Police also seized the car used by the suspect, which is estimated to be worth RM20,000.

Ahmad stated the syndicate is believed to have been active since last year.

All the seized drugs were suspected to be for the local market, with the potential to supply 12,147 users.

A urine test on the suspect returned negative results.

However, the man has four prior convictions for drug-related offences.

The suspect has been remanded for seven days from April 16 to assist investigations.

He is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries the death penalty or life imprisonment.

If the death penalty is not imposed, the offence carries a minimum of 15 strokes of the cane.

“The Melaka police contingent hopes the public will continue to provide information on drug trafficking activities in the area,” Ahmad said.

Information can be channelled to the Narcotics Criminal Investigation Division of the Alor Gajah IPD at 06-556 2222.
