JOHOR BAHRU – Barisan Nasional (BN) has unofficially secured 49 of Johor's 56 state seats, clinching a two-thirds majority and strengthening its grip on the state government.
The result will give BN a commanding mandate for the next five years and enables the coalition to pass constitutional amendments and other key legislation in the state assembly without relying on support from opposition lawmakers.
The victory also ensures Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi will continue as Menteri Besar after leading BN's campaign centred on economic development, political stability and continuity in governance.
The outcome potentially marks one of BN's strongest performances in Johor in recent years and reinforces the state's status as one of the coalition's traditional strongholds.
Throughout the campaign, BN focused on its record in government, highlighting efforts to attract investments, create jobs and improve infrastructure, while pledging to address cost-of-living concerns and strengthen economic growth.
Political observers said the result reflected voter preference for stability and continuity amid economic uncertainties, while also signalling confidence in the administration led by caretaker Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi.
The election was closely watched nationally as a barometer of political sentiment ahead of the next general election, with parties across the political divide viewing Johor as a key battleground.
For the opposition, the result represents a significant setback despite efforts to make inroads into BN-held constituencies. Opposition leaders are expected to review campaign strategies and voter outreach efforts following the defeat.
Voters interviewed during the campaign consistently cited bread-and-butter issues such as the rising cost of living, employment opportunities, wages and housing affordability as their main concerns.
With the election decided, attention is expected to shift quickly to the formation of the new state executive council and the administration's plans to deliver on its campaign promises.
