Viktor Hovland beats Scottie Scheffler in dramatic Travelers Championship playoff

Viktor Hovland secured a dramatic victory at the Travelers Championship, sinking a crucial 7-foot birdie putt on the first playoff hole on Monday morning.

His triumph came after Scottie Scheffler, his formidable opponent, narrowly missed a 4-foot birdie attempt that would have extended the contest.

The playoff itself was a result of Scheffler's clutch performance on Sunday night, where he holed an 8-foot par putt in near darkness to force the extra hole.

Returning to the par-4 18th, both golfers found the center of the fairway. Scheffler’s approach shot landed just four feet from the pin, igniting cheers from approximately 3,000 fans surrounding the green.

Hovland, mirroring his Sunday rally where he overcame a two-shot deficit, responded by placing his own approach within six feet.

His downhill birdie putt, featuring a sharp left-to-right break, just caught the inside right edge of the cup. Scheffler’s subsequent putt, played outside the left edge with too much pace, rolled past.

This marks Hovland’s tenth worldwide victory and eighth on the PGA Tour, with his last win being the Valspar Championship in March 2025.

For Scheffler, it was his fourth runner-up finish this year, following an opening season win at The American Express.

Scheffler was also in contention at the Masters and the US Open earlier this year, but was unable to secure victory in either tournament.

The playoff was charged with energy, as Norwegian fans, fresh from the World Cup in Boston, chanted "Hov-land!" in their soccer jerseys.

American supporters quickly countered with "Scot-tie Scheff-ler!" chants, reminiscent of the partisan atmosphere at last year's Ryder Cup. Norway's next World Cup match is set for Dallas, Scheffler's hometown, when they take on Ivory Coast in the round of 32.

Meanwhile, Mauricio Pochettino’s USA are due to face Bosnia and Herzegovina on Wednesday night.
