KOTA KINABALU: Parti Warisan lodged a police report over an alleged fake letter purportedly bearing the signature of its President Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal, which claimed he had appealed to the Sabah Immigration Department Director to release an undocumented migrant from detention.
Acting Warisan Wira Chief Mohd Firdaus Diun lodged the report, alleging that the letterhead and signature used in the document were falsified with the intention of damaging Shafie’s reputation.
Warisan Secretary-General Datuk Loretto S. Padua Jr said the party viewed the matter seriously and had handed information on the individual believed to be involved to the authorities for investigation.
He said Warisan would cooperate fully with the police investigation and allow the legal process to take its course.
“Warisan is open to criticism and differences of opinion in a democratic country. However, we will not compromise on false allegations, document falsification or attempts to damage anyone’s reputation through deception and false information,” he said in a statement, Friday.
Loretto also called for an end to what he described as political attacks linking Warisan with undocumented migrants, saying the public was capable of making their own judgment.
He added that the misuse of artificial intelligence (AI) technology to create fake documents, images and content that could mislead the public and damage reputations should be addressed in accordance with the law.
He said Warisan would also lodge an official complaint with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), while Shafie had instructed his lawyers to initiate legal action against those responsible.
