Popular navigation app Waze has broken its silence, denying claims that its platform poses any security risks to users or the Malaysian government.

The statement comes after an official directive issued by Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar, prohibiting all civil servants from using the navigation app with immediate effect due to security concerns.

The company explained that its operations strictly adhere to international data protection laws to safeguard user privacy globally.

Clarification follows questions from M’sian MPs

The clarification from the navigation company follows recent concerns raised by local lawmakers, including Raub MP Chow Yu Hui and Bandar Kuching MP Dr Kelvin Yii, who called for greater transparency regarding the specific security risk criteria evaluated.

The issue first gained traction after Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim expressed concerns over potential security risks associated with Waze operating under Israeli laws, encouraging Malaysians to consider switching to local alternatives like TuJu, developed by the Malaysian Highway Authority (LLM).

The ban, implemented following National Cybersecurity Committee (JKSN) Meeting No. 3 of 2026, sparked widespread discussion on how security risks are assessed between Waze and other US-owned platforms like Google Maps, WhatsApp, and Instagram.

Compliance with global privacy standards

Waze maintained its stance that its data infrastructure and privacy protocols are governed by strict international standards to prevent any misuse or exploitation of user information.

Despite the official clarification from Waze, the government directive prohibiting the app’s use across ministries and public sector agencies remains in full effect as mandated by civil service leadership.
