Iran played out a 2-2 draw against New Zealand in their first match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, but it was a game dominated by political controversy.

Boos could be heard during the Iranian national anthem after the United States went to war with Iran in the weeks leading up to the tournament.

Iran were also told to “leave immediately” after the 2-2 draw with New Zealand, having to fly straight back to Tijuana rather than stay and recover in California.

It is an unsavoury situation to digest, and it even appeared to seep into the stands as a FIFA steward allegedly confiscated the Iranian flag from a supporter.

FIFA steward alleged to have taken Iranian flag from a supporter

With the scoreline tied at 1-1 during this Group G clash, an Iranian fan was left upset after claiming to have had their nation’s flag confiscated by a steward.

As you can see in the footage above, the supporter in question alleged that they were told to hand over their flag or be kicked out of the SoFi Stadium, after being approached by an official.

Despite the political tensions between the United States and Iran, we see absolutely no reason why Iranian fans should not be allowed to celebrate their country and display their national flag – inside or outside of stadiums during the World Cup.

We hope FIFA come out and address this situation, as no fan of any nation should feel like they have to hide their colours.

This is the World Cup, after all. For almost a century since the tournament began in 1930, it has been a global celebration of football which helps to bring people together – no matter who you are or where you come from.

With Iran already being made to stay in Mexico and travel lengthy distances for their games, the least FIFA can do is ensure supporters are able to proudly display the national flag.
