- Airbnb has updated its policy to ban hosts from demanding guests complete onerous chores typically carried out by cleaners, such as stripping bedsheets, taking rubbish offsite or washing and putting away dishes.
- Applicable to all reservations booked on or after 20 November, the rules permit hosts to make only reasonable requests, such as asking guests to place used dishes in the sink.
- The platform has redesigned listing pages to feature a prominent section for house rules and requests, ensuring guests can evaluate host expectations prior to booking.
- Hosts are able to choose from seven standardised house rules covering quiet hours, pets, smoking and guest limits, though exceptions exist for local issues like drought-related water restrictions.
- Both hosts and guests can report non-compliance with the updated policies to Airbnb, which has warned that repeated or severe violations will result in consequences.
