When and where ‘intense’ thunderstorms will hit UK causing travel disruption

  • The Met Office has issued yellow weather warnings for intense thunderstorms and heavy rain across much of England and Wales on Wednesday and Thursday.
  • Downpours could bring up to 30mm of rain in less than an hour and over 75mm in 12 hours in some areas, creating a risk of sudden surface water flooding.
  • Forecasters have warned of travel disruption, difficult driving conditions, and a small risk of fast-flowing floodwater causing a danger to life.
  • Additional hazards include large hail of up to 2cm, frequent lightning strikes, and gusty winds capable of damaging property and outdoor structures.
  • The severe weather follows prolonged heatwaves and drought conditions that have been declared across nearly three-quarters of England and the whole of Wales.
