A Technical Breakdown at TuJu Or What?
Just a day ago Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced a ban on Waze for civil servants on official duty and strongly recommending TuJu, a locally developed highway navigation app as a privacy-centric alternative.
Within 24 hours of the government mandate and media exposure, TuJu suffered widespread server outages, route navigation failures, and UI glitches. Downloads skyrocketed past 700,000 in a single day, causing the Malaysian Highway Authority (LLM) and co-developer Prosignal Consortium to issue an official public apology for the system crash.
What Caused TuJu’s Day-One Failure?
Unprecedented TuJu User Surge & Server Bottleneck
Before the announcement, TuJu functioned primarily as a highway camera and toll checker app for long-distance drivers and so its users were small. When the government directed civil servants to switch to TuJu immediately, downloads exploded to over 700,000 users within 24 hours.
The app’s back-end servers were not configured with dynamic auto-scaling to accommodate hundreds of thousands of simultaneous real-time location ping requests.
Live CCTV streams and toll calculation APIs hit hard throughput limits, freezing app startup screens and causing network timeout errors.
TuJu Designed for Highways, Not Turn-by-Turn City Driving
TuJu was developed by the Malaysian Highway Authority (LLM) in collaboration with Prosignal Consortium Sdn Bhd specifically as a highway travel companion which is sadly not a full-fledged urban navigation engine.
Excellent for highway CCTV feeds, rest area (R&R) locator maps, toll cost calculators, and MyJalan pothole reporting ….. that about it… for now.
TuJu is missing dynamic lane detection and complex routing logic for city intersections which are areas where dirt drivers need.
TuJu Missing Real-Time Crowdsourced Traffic Data
Apps like Waze rely on millions of active, passive drivers sending speed and location telemetry continuously to map traffic jams, accidents, and speed traps in real time.
TuJu’s routing logic relied heavily on static authority reports, CCTV cameras, and highway concessionaire logs. Without millions of active background telemetry nodes, its algorithm could not adapt dynamically to sudden traffic delays or offer real-time rerouting around gridlock.
TuJu Software Bugs & Routing Inaccuracies
Users taking to social media platforms reported significant user experience issues on day one where there was inaccurate ETA calculations due to latency in traffic feed processing. Also, the route guidance was sending drivers down outdated or inefficient roads/direction. Also, TuJu had interface freezes and battery strain caused by un-optimised background location tracking.
