Nolan Smith Jr. is facing a legal issue before the Philadelphia Eagles fully turn toward the new NFL season.

The Eagles pass rusher was arrested in Georgia after authorities accused him of driving at an extreme speed on the interstate.

The case now puts a spotlight on Smith’s judgment at a time when Philadelphia has already shown long-term belief in him.

Nolan Smith Jr. arrested after Philadelphia Eagles defender was allegedly clocked at 135 mph

ESPN reported that Nolan Smith Jr. was arrested in Twiggs County, Georgia, and accused of speeding and reckless driving.

” Eagles linebacker Nolan Smith Jr. was arrested Friday and accused of speeding and reckless driving in Georgia,” the Twiggs County Sheriff’s Office told ESPN.

“According to notes taken by a member of the sheriff’s office that night, Smith was clocked going 135 mph in a 70 mph zone on the interstate at 10:41 in the evening,” a representative added.

The allegation is serious because the reported speed was nearly double the posted limit, turning a traffic stop into a reckless-driving case.

Nolan Smith Jr. arrest gives Philadelphia Eagles an unwanted offseason distraction

Smith’s arrest comes at a difficult time because the Eagles are preparing for organized team activities while expecting him to remain a key part of their pass rush.

Philadelphia drafted Smith in the first round in 2023 after his standout career at Georgia, where he was part of two national championship teams.

His role has grown since entering the league. Smith recorded 6.5 sacks during the 2024 regular season and added four more in the playoffs during the Eagles’ Super Bowl run.

That production explains why the Eagles have continued investing in him, but it also makes the arrest harder to ignore. A player expected to be part of the defensive core now has a legal matter to deal with before the season begins.

Smith was previously faced a traffic-related charge in 2022 while at Georgia, adding another layer to concerns about repeated driving issues. Smith’s football standing remains strong, but this case shifts attention away from his development.

The Eagles will now wait for the legal process while hoping the incident does not become a bigger offseason problem.
