Emmitt Smith has explained why he is supporting the Kansas City Chiefs now that his son, EJ Smith, is with the team.

The Dallas Cowboys legend spent 13 seasons in Dallas and won three Super Bowls, so seeing him back Kansas City was always going to feel strange to some Cowboys fans.

But Smith’s answer on Inside Coverage made the truth obvious. This is not about leaving the Cowboys behind. It is about supporting his son.

Emmitt Smith’s Chiefs stance is about family, not football

Smith was asked how he would handle a potential Cowboys and Chiefs matchup, with EJ now trying to build his NFL career in Kansas City.

He was also asked whether he would wear a split jacket, half Cowboys and half Chiefs, to show divided loyalty.

Smith did not hide behind a safe answer. He said: “I would be the guy that represent my son no matter where he’s at. No, I would not be that guy.”

That is the clearest answer he could have given. Smith is not trying to please both fan bases. He is choosing his son.

There is nothing performative about that. It is more honest than pretending a jacket could capture what this moment means to him.

He has already chosen his son over old loyalty before

This is not new for Smith. He pointed back to EJ’s college career to explain why the Chiefs situation should not surprise anyone.

When Texas A&M played Florida, Smith said he was “decked out in A&M gear”.

That mattered because Florida is his own alma mater. Still, Smith made his position clear.

He said: “I love my Gators, but I love my son a lot more.”

That line explains everything. Smith has already shown that family comes before old allegiances when EJ is involved.

Cowboys fans should not see this as betrayal

Smith’s place in Cowboys history does not need defending. His Dallas legacy was secure long before EJ signed with Kansas City after going undrafted.

That context matters. EJ is not a guaranteed star asking his father to switch football identities. He is an undrafted player trying to earn his way in the league.

Smith described watching that process as “nerve-wracking as a father”, but also “a wonderful thing to see”.

That is the human part of the story. The Cowboys gave Emmitt Smith the stage for a Hall of Fame career. EJ Smith is his son.

Those two truths do not conflict.

For anyone still questioning why Smith is backing the Chiefs, his answer should settle it. He has not turned his back on Dallas. He has simply made it clear that family comes first.
