Perikatan Nasional (PN) emerged as a major opposition coalition in the 2022 general election, with Pas making significant electoral gains.

SHAH ALAM – Perikatan Nasional (PN) has been deregistered by the Registrar of Societies (RoS) after failing to provide a satisfactory explanation for alleged breaches of its constitution.

The decision, announced on Oct 20, followed a complaint by Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) over its exclusion from a PN Supreme Council emergency meeting on July 16.

RoS found that PN had breached Clause 7.1 of its constitution by denying Bersatu the right to attend and participate in the meeting.

The deregistration comes amid worsening tensions between Bersatu and Pas over PN's membership, leadership and internal decision-making.

How did RoS reach its decision?

On Sept 22, RoS issued PN a notice under subsection 13(2) of the Societies Act 1966, giving the coalition an opportunity to explain why its registration should not be cancelled.

PN submitted its response and supporting documents on Oct 12.

However, RoS said the explanation failed to refute the grounds for deregistration and did not provide sufficient justification for retaining PN's registration.

The registrar subsequently cancelled PN's registration under subparagraph 13(1)(c)(iv) of the Act.

  How did PN begin?

PN was formed in 2020 following the collapse of the Pakatan Harapan government during the Sheraton Move, which paved the way for Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin to become prime minister.

The coalition was registered in August 2020, bringing together parties including Bersatu and Pas.

It later expanded to include Parti Gerakan Rakyat Malaysia and the Malaysian Indian People's Party (MIPP).

PN emerged as a major opposition coalition in the 2022 general election, with Pas making significant electoral gains.

 What led to the dispute?

Relations between Bersatu and Pas deteriorated over disagreements concerning leadership, political cooperation and the coalition's direction.

In June 2026, Pas announced that it would end its political cooperation with Bersatu, raising further questions about PN's future.

The dispute escalated when Bersatu complained to RoS about its exclusion from PN's Supreme Council emergency meeting on July 16.

Bersatu also raised concerns about its membership status within the coalition.

The complaint prompted RoS to examine whether PN had complied with its own constitution, with the alleged breach of Clause 7.1 becoming a key ground for the deregistration decision.

What does the decision mean for PN?

The deregistration could complicate PN's preparations for the upcoming Melaka state election, particularly its ability to use the coalition's established name and logo.

The decision also raises questions about how PN's component parties will coordinate their election campaigns while the coalition's legal status remains in dispute.
