
Kota Kinabalu: Four women were fined a total of RM5,600 by the Magistrate’s Court here for gambling-related offences.
Anizah Mazri, Aisha Abdullah, Felicia Pagrios and Nuriza Ismarina each pleaded guilty before Magistrate Marilyn Kelvin to the charges framed against them.
They were each fined RM1,400 or one month’s jail.
Anizah, 51, was fined for having four pieces unlicensed public lottery tickets at about 3.40pm, on April 5, in front of a cafe, at Dataran Pomoi, in Putatan.
The court ordered RM50 seized from Anizah to be forfeited.
Aisha, 21, was found of purchasing a piece of paper bearing numbers at about 12.40pm, on June 2, in front of a premises at Sadong Jaya here.
Aisha, who was unrepresented, requested a lower fine, saying she could not afford it.
The court also ordered the RM50 seized from her to be forfeited.
Felicia, 21, was fined for purchasing four pieces of illegal lottery tickets at about 4pm on May 20, in front of a salon in Penampang.
Anizah, Aisha and Felicia were charged under Section 9(1) of the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953, which provides for a fine of up to RM5,000 or a jail term of up to six months, or both, on conviction.
Meanwhile, Nuriza, 30, was found gambling in a public place at a premises in Plaza Kivatu, Penampang, at about 4.10pm on July 2.
She was charged under Section 7(2) of the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953, which provides for a fine of up to RM5,000 or a jail term of up to six months, or both, on conviction.
Inspectors Dzulfamie Amrin and Yusdi Basri prosecuted, applied for deterrent sentences.
