Punjab DGP Gaurav Yadav on Saturday paid homage to deceased ASI Joga Singh at his residence in Batala police district’s Ghania Ke Bangar village.

He expressed sympathy with the bereaved family. Yadav was accompanied by DIG (Border Range) Sandeep Goel and Batala SSP Mehtab Singh. He arrived at 11 am, and spent a considerable amount of time at the late officer’s residence. “ASI Joga Singh has made the supreme sacrifice in the line of duty, exemplifying the highest traditions of Punjab Police through his courage, dedication, and selfless service. His sacrifice will always be remembered with pride and honour,” the DGP said. Joga Singh (54), who joined the Punjab Police as a Constable in 1989 and was posted in the traffic staff of the Amritsar Police Commissionerate, was killed on May 24. He is survived by his mother, wife, son, and daughter.

The DGP added that the Punjab Government was fully committed to supporting the bereaved family, and would extend all assistance and welfare benefits to them.

Two days after the Tehreek-e-Taliban Hindustan (TTH), a Pakistan-based militant outfit, claimed responsibility for the crime, the organisation had released a chilling video of the killing.

The footage captures the sequence of events leading to the attack on Joga Singh while he was riding his two-wheeler.

Attackers can be seen opening fire on the officer even as he was riding his scooter. Following the burst of bullets, the ASI fell on the roadside. The assailants subsequently approached his body, and filmed it closely. This pattern was consistent with how the TTH documented the double murder of two cops guarding the international border near Adhian village in Gurdaspur district. The main accused, Ranjit Singh, hailing from a nearby village, had shot dead the cops and had filmed the crime.

He later transmitted the video of the double-murder to his handlers based in Pakistan. The TTH had released the video publicly.

The SSP said, “It is appropriate that we honour those who make the ultimate choice to give up their lives for the security of the nation.”
