Yellow alert up on Visayas grid as several power plants remain unavailable

MANILA, Philippines — The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) placed the Visayas grid under yellow alert on Thursday, as several power plants continue to remain unavailable.

It said that the alert would take effect from 4  p.m. to 8 p.m. as peak demand was expected to reach around 2,291 megawatts (MW), while available supply was only at 2,478 MW.

Twenty-three plants are on forced outage while 13 others are running on derated capacities for a total of 1,036.6 MW unavailable to the grid.

Major coal plants such as Therma Visayas Inc. Unit 1, Therma Visayas Inc. Unit 2, Kepco SPC Power Corporation Unit 1, Cebu Energy Development Corp. Unit 1, and TPC Coal remain unavailable, according to the transmission firm.

A yellow alert is issued when the operating margin is insufficient to meet the transmission grid’s contingency requirement.
