MANILA, Philippines — National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) on Tuesday issued red and yellow alerts for the Visayas grid as some major power plants cintinue to be unavailable.
In its 7:30 a.m. advisory, the transmission firm said that the yellow alert would be between 4 p.m. and 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. while the red alert would be between 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. as peak demand is estimated to reach 2,482 megawatts (MW) against an available capacity of only 2,452 MW.
NGCP said that currently, 30 plants were on forced outage, while 16 plants were running on derated capacities, for a total of 861.2 MW unavailable to the grid.
The company said that the factors that contributed to the red and yellow alerts were the unavailability of Visayas’ large coal plants, namely Therma Visayas Inc.1, Therma Visayas Inc. 2, and KEPCO SPC Power Corporation Unit 1; and the limited power imports from Mindanao due to the planned outages of some power plants in the region.
A red alert status is issued when power supply is insufficient to meet consumer demand and the transmission grid’s regulating requirement.
Meanwhile, a yellow alert status is issued when the operating margin is insufficient to meet the transmission grid’s contingency requirement.
