I’ve never been a fan of eating alone. The thought of sitting by myself in a crowded place always makes me feel like people are staring, even if they’re not. But my craving for ramen was stronger than that.

I went online searching for something affordable and came across a place called 9.9 Ramen. Since I live in Klang, travelling into the city just for food isn’t something I do unless it really sounds worth it. What caught my attention were the reviews and of course, the name. Ramen for RM9.90? That sounded too good to be true. Even if it turned out disappointing, at that price, I figured it wouldn’t hurt too much to find out.

A quiet corner that turns busy fast

The shop sits on Level 4 of Lot 10, tucked in a corner. When I first reached, it was calm, with just a few customers quietly eating. That peace didn’t last long. Once the clock struck noon, the crowd poured in. I was lucky to place my order before the lunch rush began.

When my bowl was served, the first thing that surprised me was the portion size. I honestly expected something small, but it was generous for the price. Definitely not the kind of bowl you’d finish in a few bites.

My Shiro Ramen experience

I got their signature item, Shiro Ramen, a crowd favourite online. It’s made with a chicken pottage broth that’s creamy, slightly thick, and warms you up without feeling heavy. The flavour leans towards savoury and comforting, which makes sense given it’s their bestseller.

The noodles were springy and cooked just right, holding their texture even after sitting in the soup for a bit. The meat came diced into small pieces, which I didn’t mind at all considering the price point. What impressed me most was that the broth wasn’t watered down. It had depth, the kind that makes you keep sipping even after you’ve finished the noodles.

Hot sides and good options

To go with my ramen, I ordered some of their sides. They have Tempura Takoyaki, Vegetable Tempura, and a few snacks priced around RM10 for five pieces. Everything is fried to order, they arrived to the table steaming hot. The skin was crisp on the edges, soft inside, and the filling had a nice savoury bite.

If you like variety, there are more ramen options to explore. The Spicy Chashu Miso Ramen has a mild heat that builds gradually, just enough to keep it interesting without being overpowering. Then there’s the Black Garlic Oil Ramen, which has a smokier, slightly burnt aroma that adds a distinct depth of flavour. For RM9.90, it’s a surprisingly wide range.

If you don’t mind spending a little extra, the All-In Ramen (RM16.90) comes with tori chashu and egg. There’s also the Sukiyaki Beef Ramen, featuring tender beef slices that soak up the broth beautifully. I didn’t try them all—my stomach was already full from the first bowl—but I couldn’t help sneaking glances at what other customers were having.

Affordable, satisfying, worth the trip

One thing I truly appreciated was the service. I take forever to decide what to order, and even then, the staff stayed patient and friendly. They offered helpful suggestions and kept smiling throughout, which made the whole experience feel easy and relaxed instead of rushed.

By the end of it, I was full and happy. The 9.90 ramen was way better than I expected. It’s affordable, satisfying, and something I’d gladly come back for. Sometimes, the simplest meals end up being the most rewarding.
