JAKARTA – Umno members are urged to observe decorum in their statements and respect the process and decision granting former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak a conditional pardon to serve the remainder of his sentence under house arrest until Aug 23, 2028.
Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said this at a press conference on Friday.
He said that on behalf of the entire Umno leadership and its members, he expressed his deepest gratitude to His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, the King of Malaysia, for the royal clemency granted.
“With the utmost respect, on behalf of the entire leadership and members of Umno, I offer my deepest gratitude to His Majesty Seri Paduka Baginda Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
“Umno holds in the highest regard Tuanku’s wisdom and discretion and expresses its sincerest appreciation for His Majesty’s graciousness,” he said on Friday.
Media previously reported that Sultan Ibrahim had consented to grant Najib a conditional pardon allowing him to serve the remainder of his sentence under house arrest until Aug 23, 2028, subject to the payment of a RM50 million fine.
The decision was made following Sultan Ibrahim’s consent after chairing the meeting of the Federal Territories Pardons Board.
Zahid said that on behalf of the entire Umno leadership and its members, he again expressed his deepest gratitude to Sultan Ibrahim and appreciation for His Majesty’s graciousness.
Zahid, who is also the Deputy Prime Minister, said Umno welcomed the decision with gratitude as it allowed Najib to serve the remainder of his sentence under house arrest, describing it as highly meaningful to the former prime minister, his family and the wider Umno family.
“This development is very meaningful to him and his family, as well as the entire Umno family, who have never stopped placing their hopes and offering their prayers,” he said.
He said Umno’s position from the outset had been to submit the application with due decorum and humility through the established channels.
“Respect for the institution of the Malay Rulers, the supremacy of the Constitution and the rule of law will continue to be our guiding principles,” he said.
Zahid also expressed gratitude for the development, which he described as bringing great relief to Najib and his family and something that would always be remembered with appreciation by the wider Umno family.
“May Allah SWT continue to grant His Majesty well-being and safeguard the peace and harmony of the country,” he said.
