Kota Kinabalu: A 27-year-old engineer, who was remanded for four days for allegedly sending death threats to counsel Datuk Ram Singh in connection with an investigation related to the inquest of Zara Qairina Mahathir, was released on police bail on Friday morning.

Ram, who was informed by the Investigating Officer (IO) of the case about the matter, said the suspect was released under the condition that he must report to the IO once a month, with his father as surety.

According to Ram, the IO will send the suspect’s mobile phone for forensic analysis as the suspect had deleted all text messages, and the next mention date for the case has been set for Nov 10.

Ram said he was unsure whether the suspect would be charged on that date, as the forensic analysis is still pending.

On Wednesday, Magistrate Wan Farrah Farriza Wan Ghazali granted a four-day remand from Oct 9 to 12 following an application by the IO after the suspect surrendered himself to the police station here on Tuesday.

The man, who hails from Ipoh, Perak, was remanded to assist in investigations under Section 507C(1) of the Penal Code, which carries a jail term of up to one year, or a fine, or both, for any individual who uses words or acts of threat, insult, or intimidation that may cause a person to feel disturbed, fearful, or threatened.

According to Ram, some of the messages sent to him included: “Nanti mati kamu disoal Tuhan” (“You’ll be questioned by God when you die”), “Biar kau mati katak”(“May you die miserably”), and “Jangan sampai kami cari kau, kau mati kalau kami cari” (“Don’t make us come for you, you’ll die if we do”).

The suspect is believed to have obtained Ram’s personal number before sending the threatening and insulting messages via WhatsApp.

Ram said the suspect later sent him an apology message.

However, Ram said he would proceed with the case and would not withdraw the police report.
