Zohran Mamdani’s World Cup ticket gesture drew praise after 1,000 New Yorkers were given an affordable route into one of the tournament’s biggest early matches.
The New York City mayor celebrated with lottery winners at the first NY/NJ game of the 2026 World Cup, turning a high-profile Brazil vs Morocco match into a local access story.
At a tournament already under scrutiny for ticket prices, the move landed because it put ordinary fans inside MetLife Stadium.

As Mayor Zohran Mamdani posted, “1,000 New Yorkers won our lottery for affordable tickets to the World Cup.”
He then summed up the point of the gesture: “The beautiful game belongs to everyone.”
The program was announced before the tournament and offered $50 tickets to New York City residents through a lottery, with free round-trip bus transportation to MetLife Stadium also included.
The tickets covered several NY/NJ World Cup matches, not the final, giving local residents a real chance to attend games that would otherwise be out of reach for many families.
The first match in the area was Brazil vs Morocco at MetLife Stadium, where Morocco took the lead through Ismael Saibari before Vinícius Júnior equalized in a 1-1 draw.
For the winners, that meant watching Brazil’s stars and Morocco’s tournament-tested side in person rather than being priced out from home.
Fans praise Mamdani but ask what affordable really means
The reaction was mostly warm. One supporter wrote: “Love this. Seeing 1,000 working New Yorkers get a real shot at the World Cup feels good. The beautiful game should actually be for the people. Nice one, Mayor.”
Another added: “I can see a future USA President ,u are doing a great job in Supporting your Community in Newyork.”
The football emotion was clear too, with one fan saying: “This is what the game is all about, a leveler. NYC mayor in the stands to see Morocco Vs Brazil… It’s why we love the round leather game. Soccer is the king of sports”
Another summed up the wider feeling: “This is what the World Cup should be about giving ordinary fans a chance to be part of unforgettable moments not just those who can afford expensive tickets.Football truly belongs to everyone. ⚽”
There was also a fair question from one user: “What do you define as ‘affordable’?”
For this program, the answer was $50 plus transport. In World Cup terms, that is exactly why the gesture stood out.
