MANILA, Philippines — Several cities in Metro Manila late on Thursday announced class suspensions for Friday, due to the effects of tropical depression Maymay, along with the southwest monsoon.
As of 9:36 p.m. on Thursday, the Facebook page of the Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) said classes are suspended in the following cities:
1. Marikina City - Face-to-face and online classes in all levels
2. Las Piñas City - All levels in public and private schools
3. City of Manila - Face-to-face classes in all levels, shift to Alternative Delivery Mode
4. Muntinlupa City - Face-to-face classes in all levels, shift to Asynchronous Classes
5. Parañaque City - All levels in public and private schools
6. Malabon City - Face-to-face classes in all levels, shift to Alternative Delivery Mode
7. Valenzuela City - All levels in public and private schools
8. Mandaluyong City - Face-to-face classes in all levels, shift to Alternative Delivery Mode
9. Quezon City - Face-to-face classes in Child Development Centers, Kindergarten, Grades 1-12 and Alternative Learning System in public schools, shift to Alternative Delivery Mode
10. Pasay City - Face-to-face classes in all levels (including Childhood Development Centers) in public and private schools, shift to Alternative Delivery Mode
11. Taguig City - Face-to-face classes in all levels, shift to Alternative Delivery Mode
12. San Juan City - All levels in public and private schools
Earlier on Thursday, Manila Mayor Isko Moreno issued the order following the recommendation of the Manila City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Department (MCDRRMD).
The MCDRRMD said that the latest weather models and rainfall outlook from the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) indicated continued rainfall on Friday, with an intensity ranging from light to moderate, at times heavy rains.
The public is urged to refresh the MMDA Facebook page for updates on class suspensions across the metropolis.
As of 5 p.m. "Maymay" is forecast to continue weakening and may be downgraded into a remnant low Thursday night or early Friday morning. The remnant low of Maymay will move generally southeastward until it merges into the larger circulation of Tropical Cyclone Dolphin.
The center of Maymay was estimated at 150 kilometers east-northeast of Echague, Isabela, moving east-southeastward at 35 kilometers per hour (kph) with maximum sustained winds of 45 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 60 kph.
Maymay is forecast to be 250 km east of Casiguran, Aurora by 2 a.m. Friday.
Signal No. 1 remains up over the southeastern portion of mainland Cagayan (Tuao, Piat, Enrile, Alcala, Amulung, Baggao, Solana, Tuguegarao City, Gattaran, Peñablanca, Iguig), Isabela, Quirino, the northeastern portion of Nueva Vizcaya (Dupax del Norte, Kasibu, Quezon, Bagabag, Diadi, Bayombong, Ambaguio, Villaverde, Bambang, Solano, Alfonso Castañeda, Dupax del Sur), the northern and central portions of Aurora (Dilasag, Casiguran, Dinalungan, Dipaculao), the eastern portion of Kalinga (City of Tabuk, Pinukpuk, Tanudan, Lubuagan, Rizal), the eastern portion of Mountain Province (Paracelis, Natonin, Barlig) and the eastern portion of Ifugao (Lagawe, Aguinaldo, Asipulo, Hingyon, Kiangan, Lamut, Alfonso Lista, Mayoyao, Banaue).
At least 4 people were killed, 2 in Benguet due to a landslide and 2 in Rizal from a rockslide, and 81,000 people were affected in most parts of Luzon at the height of the heavy rains, the government disaster agencies reported.
