24 Punjabi University players honoured with Maharaja Ranjit Singh Sports Award

As many as 24 players from Punjabi University and its affiliated colleges were conferred the prestigious Maharaja Ranjit Singh State Sports Award by the Punjab Government this week. The athletes were honoured for their outstanding national and international performances between 2018 and 2023, bringing laurels to both the university and the state.

Sharing the details, Director of Sports Dr Gurdeep Kaur Randhawa noted that international shooter Amanpreet Singh was awarded a cash prize of Rs 1.54 crore, while international archer Parneet Kaur received Rs 19.5 lakh. The remaining awardees were each presented with a cash prize of Rs 5 lakh.

Among the prominent awardees in cycling were Harshveer Singh Sekhon, Vishavdeep Singh Bhangu, Rajbir Singh Mundi and Naman Kapil. Athlete Harmilan Bains was honoured in athletics, while Harshpreet Singh and Harshdeep Singh Brar received the award in judo.

From the Punjabi University campus, fencers Aina Arora and Jassirat Singh were also honoured with the prestigious award.

In archery, Sangampreet Singh, Prabhjot Kaur, Sukhbeer Singh and Raj Kaur were conferred the award. Wrestlers Sandeep Singh and Rubaljit Singh were also honoured along with weightlifter Harjinder Kaur and kabaddi player Gurlal Singh.

For their achievements in handball, Karamjit Singh, Mandeep Kaur, Harjinder Singh and Manpreet Singh were felicitated. Jasmeet Kaur was honoured in canoeing, while Avtar Singh was recognised for kayaking and rowing.

Vice-Chancellor Dr Jagdeep Singh and Registrar Dr Davinder Pal Singh congratulated the players, coaches, and college principals. They stated that the players’ achievements had brought global glory to the university and would undoubtedly inspire other students to excel in sports.
