Unidentified thieves decamped a house in Kapurthala with expensive cash and valuables on Tuesday night, decimating the entire savings of an NRI family.
The incident, which took place at the Chak Kotli village in Kapurthala, has resulted in the loss of about 35 tolas of gold and silver jewellery.
Unlike robberies that are usually carried out in locked or empty homes, this theft targeted a house where the family mmebers slept in the courtyard. It wasn’t until Wednesday morning that the family realised their home was robbed.
Unidentified thieves broke the rear wall of the house to gain access into the home, broke the cupboards and stole valuables locked inside them.
As per information, when the family woke up in the morning, they suspected something suspicious. They then saw cupboards thrown open and belongings scattered.
On inspection, the family found that 25 tolas of gold, 10 to 12 tolas of silver, Rs 2.5 lakh in cash and other valuables were missing.
Victim Baljit Kaur, whose husband works in Bahrain, said everything that her family saved with her husband’s years of hard work overseas for the past 20 years, was stolen.
Police informed that the thieves gained access to the home through the maize fields at the back of the house.
Since the family slept in the courtyard, they made a hole in the wall of the house and decamped with the valuables and cash, before anyone could find out.
The incident has instilled anger among villagers due to the frequency of thefts in the village and its vicinity.
The Sultanpur Lodhi police lodged an FIR and said the number of thieves who carried out the heist is yet to be ascertained.
Sultanpur Lodhi SHO Harinder Singh said, “A detailed investigation has been launched into the incident and CCTV footage from all neighbouring points is being probed. Lately, gaining access through fields has become a common modus operandi of thieves in villages. The culprits are being identified.”
