PUTRAJAYA:

The membership of Parti Pejuang Tanah Air (Pejuang) is only open to Malays for them to solve the various problems still shackling the community, including poverty, says its founder and former prime minister, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad (pic).

“Our view is that the Malays have many problems compared to the other races, while a solution executed for all races is not effective for the Malays,” said the party’s pro-tem chairman at a press conference, here, today.

He said the New Economic Policy was introduced to help the Malays but appeared to have benefited others more.

“We want to ensure that solutions for the Malay community are made by Malays who understand the problems of the Malays who are culturally different from others.

“Although Pejuang is a Malay party, we are not ‘at war’ with the non-Malays because without their support, we will not be able to win in the General Election.

“We will support any good party. We are not against the non-Malays, but just focusing on overcoming the problems faced by the Malay community,” he said.

On the registration status of the new party, Dr Mahathir said it was still being processed by the Registrar of Societies and if still not approved until the next General Election, the party would have another strategy to contest in the elections.

On the Sabah state election, he said the party would be supporting Parti Warisan Sabah (Warisan) led by Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal and a number of Pejuang leaders would be assisting Warisan in its election campaign.
