Man, 40, charged with trafficking 17kg syabu

Kota Kinabalu: A 40-year-old man charged with trafficking 17,509.4gm of syabu will go on trial on Nov 16–19 this year.

High Court Judge Datuk Nurchaya Hj Arshad set the date for Chew En Leong during case management on Thursday.

The court also set Nov 5 for the next pre-trial case management (PTCM) of the case.

Car wash shop owner Chew was on Oct 3, 2019 pleaded not guilty to committing the offence at 6.50pm on Dec 21, 2018 at the five-foot-way in front of the ABX Express (M) Sdn Bhd premises at Gaya Street here.

Meanwhile, the court set Nov 16 for further PTCM for another drug trafficking case.

Anthony Chan Wei Onn’s case was also for case management on Thursday.

Sarawakian Chan, 26, was on Jan 20, claimed trial to trafficking 2,129.1gm of syabu at 6.20pm on July 12, 2019 at the J&T Express premises on the ground floor, Kolam Plaza Phase 1, Jalan Lintas.

Chew and Chan were each charged under Section 39B(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act which carries the death sentence or imprisonment for life and whipping not less than 15 strokes if not sentenced to death, on conviction.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Khairul Nizam appeared for the prosecution.

Chew and Chan were represented by counsel Ram Singh and Kimberly Ye.

Meanwhile, 15 people were penalised at the Magistrate’s Court for committing drug-related offences.

Ten of them Cliff Conelly, Izam Suliman, Syahir Rashid, Arman Saah, Syahrul Azmer, Azirul Izam, Sihon Kamarudin, Nicky Alvie, Ansam Makam and Jaivin Sungkaron pleaded guilty to taking syabu at separate locations here and in Penampang between May 30 and June 26.

Cliff and Izam were fined RM2,300 or six months jail each, Arman was fined RM1,500 or four months while the rest were jailed six months each.

Taking drugs under Section 15(1) of the of the Dangerous Drug Act provides for a fine of up to RM5,000 or up to two years jail on conviction.

The other five people – Tseu Sez Min, Zainuddin Jalaludin, Muhd Fittree Omar, Junaidi Daud, and Johnny Andrew pleaded guilty to having syabu weighing 0.43gm, 0.02gm, 0.01gm, 0.03gm and 0.14gm, respectively at separate location in Penampang, Inanam, and Putatan between Jan 6 and July 1.

Tseu was jailed 16 months, Zainuddin and Fittree were handed nine months jail each, Johnny was fined RM2,800 or 10 months jail while Junaidi was sentenced to seven months jail.

They were charged under Section 12 (2) of the Dangerous Drug Act 1952 provides for a fine of up to RM100,000 or up to five years jail or both on conviction.
