Two men get jail, fine for drink-driving

Kota Kinabalu: The Magistrate’s Court here on Tuesday sentenced two men to one day jail and fined them RM10,000 or three months jail each for drink-driving.

Lester Peter, 34, and Lazarus Saduai, 41, pleaded guilty before Magistrate Jessica Ombou Kakayun for committing the offence under the amended Road Transport Act.

Lester had committed the offence at 12.01am on Jan 13, this year along Jalan Kota Kinabalu-Penampang, in front of the SMK Bahang in Penampang while Lazarus committed the offence at 10.50pm on Feb 6 this year at the same place.

They were charged under Section 45A(1) of the Road Transport (Amendment) Act  2020, which provides for a jail term of up to two years and fine between RM10,000 and  RM30,000 and lost qualification from holding or getting a driving licence for not less than two years from the date of conviction.

The court also ordered that Lester’s and Lazarus’ driving licences suspended for two years. Traffic Prosecuting Officer Mohd Firdaus Che Mustafa prosecuted.
