Manchester United have still not identified the role that interim coach Ralf Rangnick will play beyond this season.

The German is in interim charge of the first team, but he is not in the running to take the job permanently.

Rangnick has a contract with United for another two years for a consultancy role.

However, the club have not taken any steps to enlighten Rangnick about what that role would entail.

Sky Sports suggests that the role will likely involve sharing innovation insights, scouting and linking the club with other footballing minds, and other suggestions, rather than a hands-on approach to alter the setup or build a first team squad.

Such basic details, like where the German will be based, have not yet been decided.

What is clear is that Rangnick is 'highly unlikely' to become the club's sporting director.

Mauricio Pochettino and Erik ten Hag are the two leading candidates to replace Rangnick in the managerial hotseat, and it is believed the 63-year-old is not having a say in who the club hire as their next coach.
