Kota Kinabalu: A 26-year-old trader was charged in the Magistrate’s Court, Friday, with trafficking 101.59gm of syabu.

Asriyadi Bakri, who was brought before Magistrate Stephanie Sherron Abbie, was accused of committing the offence at 10.30pm on March 30, this year, at the roadside of Taman Merpati Apartment, Lorong Merpati 1, Jalan Bundusan, Penampang.

The charge under Section 39B(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, carries a punishment of either the death penalty or life in prison and whipping with a minimum of 15 strokes.

However, no plea was recorded after the charge was read out to him as the case is under the jurisdiction of the High Court.

The prosecution applied for a new mention date while waiting for the chemist’s report and objected bail as the charge has no provision for one.

Stephanie set June 7 for mention and ordered Asriyadi to be further remanded.

In another case, two Filipino labourers were charged with stealing lightning insulating copper.

Ramin Zulkarim, 23, and Shajid Khan Payong, 40, were accused of committing the offence on the 14th floor of the Horizon Hotel at 7.45am on March 25.

No plea was taken from the duo after the charge was read out to them via video conferencing.

Inspector Suzie @ Stephanie Kupit, prosecuting, applied for a new mention date in an open court and objected bail for the accused as they have no valid documents.

The court set April 13 for the duo’s appearance in open court for their plea to be taken and ordered them to be further remanded.

The charge against them was framed under Section 379 of the Penal Code.
