
Kota Kinabalu: A 38-year-old drug user was jailed five months by the Magistrate’s Court, Friday, for intentionally hurting his adoptive mother.
Rianto Umbiah pleaded guilty before Magistrate Lovely Natasha Charles to deliberately causing injury to the complainant at 8.30am on Feb 11 at Kampung Ulu, Putatan.
Framed under Section 323 of the Penal Code, the charge carries a jail term of up to a year or a fine of up to RM2,000, or both, on conviction.
Prosecuting Officer, Inspector Kelvan Elson Maik told the court Rianto tried to choke his adoptive mother and as a result, she suffered injuries on her left cheek and shoulders.

Duty Counsel Carmen Khoo, representing Rianto, requested for a lenient sentence Rianto who earns of RM60 daily as a construction worker.
Kelvan applied for a deterrent sentence.
Rianto also admitted to taking drugs under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act which carries a fine of up to RM5,000 or a jail term of up to two years, on conviction.
Kelvan informed the court that the chemist’s report is pending, proposing a bail of RM3,000 in two local sureties.
Carmen requested the court to set a minimum bail amount.
The court ordered a bail of RM1,800 with two local sureties and fixed March 21 for case management.
