
Kota Kinabalu: An unemployed man was jailed seven months by the Magistrate Court, Friday, for committing mischief by cutting telecommunication cables.
Muamar Abdul, 37, pleaded guilty before Magistrate Lovely Natasha Charles to cutting the 1.5m copper cable belonging to Telekom Malaysia at 9.10pm on Jan 22 at Tang Dynasty Hotel, Sadong Jaya.
The charge under Section 431A of the Penal Code carries a jail term of up to two years or fine or both, on conviction.
According to the prosecuting officer, Inspector Kelvan Elson Maik, a security guard carrying received information from the technician about a disturbance to the signal in the area.

Upon arriving, police saw four men cutting Telekom Malaysia (TM) cables. Aware of the presence of the police, they tried to flee.
However, Muamar was caught. The police also confiscated a Telekom Malaysia cable along with equipment used to cut the cable.
Duty Counsel Carmen Khoo, representing Muamar, requested leniency, citing his occupation as a fisherman and his role in financially supporting his parents.
She also said Muamar was a first-time offender. Inspector Kelvan applied for a deterrence sentence and ordered the exhibit to be returned and the tools to be disposed of.
In another court, a 40-year-old man was charged with assaulting another man.
Shamri Nurhasad pleaded not guilty before Magistrate Stephanie Sherron Abbie to voluntarily causing hurt to Marudin by punching him on his left eye at 3pm on Jan 16 at a workshop, here.
Shamri was charged under Section 323 of the Penal Code, which carried a jail term of up to one year or a fine of up to RM2,000 or both, on conviction.
The court set Feb 8 for case management and released Shamri on bail of RM1,000 in two sureties.
