Alas targets strong finish in AVC Cup

CANDON, Ilocos Sur — Alas Pilipinas aims to close out its 2026 Asian Volleyball Confederation (AVC) Women’s Cup campaign on a winning note as it takes on a formidable Iran side in the classification round on Sunday at the Candon City Arena.

The Philippine women’s volleyball team is targeting a seventh-place finish when it faces Iran at 9:30 a.m.

Alas wrapped up the preliminary round with a 2-3 record, securing victories over Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan. However, the team suffered a heartbreaking five-set loss to Australia before absorbing lopsided defeats against regional powerhouses South Korea and Taiwan.

In a crucial must-win match against Taiwan, the Philippines faltered in straight sets, 25-16, 25-14, 25-10, ending its hopes of reaching the podium.

Despite falling short of expectations this year, Alas Pilipinas had previously impressed in the AVC Cup, clinching bronze in 2024 and a historic silver medal in 2025.

Veteran Jovelyn Gonzaga expressed pride in representing the country, emphasizing her enduring commitment to Philippine volleyball.

“Philippines, always. I am excited for the future of Philippine volleyball,” Gonzaga said.

“We may no longer be on the court when it reaches its highest peaks, but we are happy knowing that, in our own way, we helped build a foundation for the next generation.”

“Fourteen years of being part of the national team — on and off, indoor to beach — it has always been an honor and a privilege to wear the Philippine colors and serve the country. Until my very last drop of strength, I gave everything I had for the flag and for the Filipino people.”

Candon City Mayor Eric Singson echoed the sentiment, assuring continued support from local fans.

“Even though they lost three games, the people will be here to support them. I am sure of that,” he said.

The Philippines will rely on its young core, including Alyssa Solomon, Niña Ytang and Thea Gagate. Veterans Alyssa Valdez, Gonzaga, Ces Molina and Tots Carlos are expected to provide offensive firepower, while liberos Alyssa Eroa and Kyla Atienza will anchor the defense.

Iran, which also holds a 2-3 record, finished fourth in Pool B. The Philippines is currently ranked 46th in the world, just behind Iran at 44th.
