
MANILA, Philippines — Filipino tennis ace Alex Eala surged to a season-best No. 14 in the WTA Finals race after ruling the 500 Mubadala D.C. Open in Washington early Tuesday in Manila.
Turning back world No. 3 and tournament top seed Jessica Pegula in the final, 4-6, 6-4, 6-0, Eala boosted herself with 508 points to jump from No. 25 to No. 14 with a total of 1,887 points.
Ranked No. 28 in the official rankings, Eala likewise improved to a career-best No. 20 in the live rankings with a total of 2,106 points.
