Kuala Lumpur: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim (pic) has acknowledged weaknesses in the early handling of Zara Qairina Mahathir’s case, saying authorities must learn from them.
According to New Straits Times, Anwar said there had been weaknesses in the initial handling of the case and stressed the need for urgency in addressing school safety issues.
“Urgency must be there. There were weaknesses early on when we handled the Zara Qairina case, and we must learn from that,” he was quoted as saying.
Anwar said the Education Ministry had introduced measures including hostel monitoring, safety audits, counselling and mental health support, but acknowledged that more needed to be done.
He also said police had been formally allowed to enter schools at any time, while an additional RM15 million would be allocated next year for closed-circuit television cameras at 1,000 schools.
