Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's recent call to cease all debates, discussions, and opinions regarding the partial pardon granted to disgraced former premier Datuk Seri Najib Razak appears to contradict the principles of liberalism, openness, transparency, tolerance, and accountability that are purportedly central to his vision of democracy.

Unless the media has misrepresented Anwar's statement, veteran journalist and blogger Datuk A. Kadir Jasin suggests that such a directive infringes upon the constitutional rights of every citizen, particularly the freedom of speech and expression.

In a Facebook post, Kadir, a national journalism laureate, expressed concern over the attempt to stifle discussion about a significant decision affecting millions of Malaysians, particularly when it concerns a figure like Najib whose actions have had far-reaching negative consequences.

Anwar's stance revolves around the contention that the decision of the Pardons Board to reduce Najib's sentence by 50% and his fine by 76% was made at the discretion of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong (YDPA).

However, Kadir critiques Anwar's portrayal of the Agong's decision as final and as a "beacon of charity," arguing that it implies that any criticism or scrutiny of the pardon granted to Najib is unwarranted or even taboo in civil society discussions.

He finds it highly inappropriate if Anwar is indeed attempting to shift blame onto the Agong, as some quarters, including former Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission chief commissioner Latheefa Koya, have suggested.

Kadir emphasizes that as the elected head of government, the Prime Minister holds direct responsibility to the people and acts as the intermediary between them and the Agong in official matters. Thus, he asserts that it is implausible for the Prime Minister to have had no involvement in Najib's partial pardon.

He concludes by suggesting that Anwar may be either denying his responsibility by claiming non-involvement in the pardon process or attempting to mitigate the negative backlash associated with Najib's pardon.

The controversy surrounding Najib's pardon raises questions not only about the decision itself but also about the transparency and accountability of the pardon process within Malaysia's democratic framework.
