BEAUFORT: A pedestrian bridge in Kampung Indomadi, Padas Damit, was swept away by strong floodwaters around 4pm on Wednesday.

Village Security and Development Committee (JKKK) Chairman Sipiah Amat said the bridge collapsed after floodwaters carried large amounts of river grass and debris, which piled up and overwhelmed the structure.

The bridge was a critical link for villagers, including those transporting oil palm and rubber, schoolchildren heading to class, and elderly residents seeking medical treatment at clinics and hospitals.

Sipiah, who narrowly avoided being swept away, said villagers had attempted to clear the debris earlier, but the water current was too strong.

He added that the collapse would particularly affect pregnant women and vulnerable groups, who must now take a much longer alternative route.

The bridge connected seven households and served as the main access to town, the mosque, and nearby plantations.

Sipiah urged the government to construct a stronger, elevated concrete bridge to prevent future incidents.

“I hope Lumadan Assemblyman Datuk Ruslan Muharam and Sipitang MP Datuk Matbali Musah will visit the site and take immediate action,” he said.
