Malaysian families will receive more financial assistance to prepare for the 2027 school session, with the government increasing the Early Schooling Aid (BAP) from RM150 to RM200 per student under Budget 2027. The government has allocated RM1 billion for the aid, which is intended to help parents cover back-to-school expenses.

Under the revised rate, a family with four school-going children will receive RM800, up from RM600 previously. Anwar said the assistance would be distributed directly at schools, giving parents an opportunity to meet teachers and discuss their children's academic progress and character development. He stressed that the approach reflects the shared responsibility of parents and educators in supporting students' growth and education. Prime Minister and Finance Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced the increase when tabling Budget 2027 in the Dewan Rakyat on Friday, saying the initiative would benefit approximately 5.3 million students nationwide.

In my opinion, the increase in Early Schooling Aid (BAP) from RM150 to RM200 per student under Budget 2027 is a positive move, especially as parents continue to face rising costs for school uniforms, shoes, stationery and other essential supplies. Although an additional RM50 per child may seem modest, it can make a meaningful difference for lower-income families. For a family with four school-going children, the RM800 assistance could help ease the financial pressure of preparing for the new school year.

I also welcome the decision to distribute the aid directly at schools, as it creates an opportunity for parents to connect with teachers and become more involved in their children's education. However, the government should ensure that the assistance is distributed efficiently and on time so families can use it when they need it most. Overall, this is a commendable initiative, but its real impact will depend on whether the amount is sufficient to keep pace with rising education costs and reach the families who need it most.

The measures announced under Budget 2027 highlight the government's focus on easing the financial burden on families, improving student welfare and enabling teachers to concentrate on their core responsibility of educating children.
