Kota Kinabalu: SPArKS (The Society of Performing Arts Kota Kinabalu, Sabah) will showcase its latest theatrical production, The Carnival of the Animals, set to take centre stage on 17–18 October 2025 at the JKKN Sabah Auditorium.
This multi-genre, family-friendly spectacle promises to bring animals to life through a dazzling blend of music, movement, and narrative theatre, according to a press statement. .
Audiences can look forward to three show times: - Friday, 17 October – 8:00pm and Saturday, 18 October – 2:00pm & 8:00pm, a SPArKs spokesman said.
For the first time in Kota Kinabalu, Camille Saint-Saëns’ beloved musical suite The Carnival of the Animals will be brought to life through a fully narrated theatrical format, featuring a five-member drama ensemble, a dynamic cast of dancers from genres including ballet, krump, pole, and lion dance acrobatics — all accompanied by a 12-piece orchestra with two grand pianos.
The script is written by Laura Rikono, who will also play the Narrator, while the music direction is led by Kenneth Chia, Principal of the Kinabalu Flute Centre.
The theatrical production promise to be a magical journey for all ages. In SPArKS’ imaginative retelling, audiences follow Luna, a curious young girl who ventures into a magical forest where music and animals come alive.
Guided by a whimsical narrator, Luna’s journey introduces children and adults alike to Saint-Saëns’ 14-movement suite, with each piece uniquely interpreted through playful choreography and storytelling.
“We’ve always wanted to create a production that brings families and the KK community together to celebrate the performing arts,” said Jasmine Leong, President of SPArKS, Organising Chairperson, and Artistic Director of the production.
“Through our vision of S.E.E — Support, Educate, and Elevate — we’ve curated a show that not only showcases local talent but also inspires audiences through music, dance, and theatre.” The production is the result of a cross-disciplinary collaboration, she added. The performance features professional musicians selected via national auditions, with all performers hailing from Sabah — except for one international musician from Singapore.
This innovative version of The Carnival of the Animals breaks away from traditional concert renditions, blending orchestral music with contemporary and cultural dance to offer a fresh and immersive experience for all.
To make the event even more engaging for families, SPArKS will host pre-carnival activities and a festive bazaar one hour before each show. Visitors can enjoy food, drinks, ice cream, and balloon animals in a lively, family-friendly environment.
The performance runs approximately 75 minutes, including a 15-minute intermission, and is suitable for children aged 3 and above.
