SEREMBAN – DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke has reminded businessman Albert Tei to change the address on his identity card first if he intends to contest in the Negeri Sembilan state election.

He said that while Malaysia practises democracy and anyone has the right to stand as a candidate, they must still comply with the stipulated requirements.

"We are a democratic country. Anyone who wants to become a candidate is welcome to do so. That is everyone's right.

"I just want to remind him to change his address first. If his address is not in Negeri Sembilan, he cannot contest," he told reporters after the Negeri Sembilan MyLesen (B2) Driving Licence Programme certificate presentation ceremony on Thursday.

He was commenting on Tei, whose full name is Tei Jiaan Cheing, 37, announcing his intention to contest the Chennah state seat in the Aug 1 election.

The Transport Minister said he was unconcerned about who chose to contest the seat, as his focus remained on serving the people and voters of Chennah to the best of his ability.

"My focus is on my work and on the people and voters of Chennah, whom I have represented for three terms. So whoever wants to contest is welcome to do so," he said.

Loke first contested the Chennah state seat in the 13th General Election, winning it with a majority of 1,098 votes after securing 5,128 votes to defeat the Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate.

In the 2023 Negeri Sembilan state election, he successfully retained the seat with a majority of 2,200 votes after polling 5,888 votes to defeat the Perikatan Nasional (PN) candidate.

Before representing Chennah, Loke served as the state assemblyman for Lobak.

Meanwhile, when asked about the Johor state election campaign, he said it had so far proceeded smoothly without any provocation or untoward incidents.
